Skin Tone in Fashion

What’s your colour? How do you pick the best colours of clothes? You know, the ones that look amazing on you? Do you have a signature colour? Let’s find out.

Have you ever been shopping and picked up a top that you loved, only to try it on and find it looks terrible on you? Sometimes it can be from an unflattering style, but often it’s because the colour clashes with your skin tone. Skin tone (along with hair and eye colour) can play a big part in how clothing suits us. Understanding your complementary colours can make your shopping experience a little easier. While these guidelines can be useful, they shouldn’t stop you from exploring other options.

Once you’ve got an idea of your skin tone you can make better decisions for those amazing pieces of clothing to add to your wardrobe. Let’s talk about matching tone and clothing colour.

Cool Skin Tone:

Your go-to clothing colours can include cool blues, violet and charcoal. If you’re choosing strong colours, keep in mind that they can make your skin look paler. Pastel versions often look amazing!

People with cool skin tone should typically stay away from bright electric blue, grass green or yellows and oranges.

Neutral Skin Tone:

Neutral Skin Tone usually equals neutral colours for your best look. White, beige, taupe, etc can be great picks, however, if you’re wanting to add a little more zip into your wardrobe, consider light peach, soft rose, jade green, or placid blue.

It’s best for neutral skin tones to avoid bright colours, especially reds or yellows.

 Warm Skin Tone:

Think autumn colours! Your best fashion picks are colours like orange, yellow, gold, as well as earthy tones like browns, rich greens and deep reds.

What to avoid? Well, you’re actually pretty lucky in fashion, as most colours will compliment your skin tone, so don’t be afraid to reach out of your comfort zone and try something new!
